The .300 Blackout is based on a shortened 5.56x45 mm case, necked down to .30 caliber. For rifles and pistols with the AR-15 platform, simply changing the barrel is enough to switch from 5.56 to .300 Blackout. The main purpose of the Blackout is subsonic use in suppressed firearms. Many bolt-action and single-shot rifles are now also produced in this caliber.
