Further down the case, the hardness increases to prevent unnecessary stretching. If it is too hard, it carries the risk of cracks. Lower down, around the primer pocket, the brass should be solid. Here, the hardness is almost double that around the neck. The material structure reveals the hardness. During processing, large soft grains are broken down into smaller grains, which makes the material harder. During annealing, the small grains become larger and the hardness decreases.
