The ELD-X (Extremely low drag – eXpanding) bullet is technologically advanced, with match precision, designed for all-around hunting, featuring the highest ballistic coefficient in its class and capable of controlled expansion at ALL practical hunting distances.
All conventional polymer tips from manufacturers melt during flight. Hornady engineers discovered that all materials used to make the tips of streamlined bullets with a high ballistic coefficient melt during flight and deform. Although this is not a significant issue in bullets with a medium ballistic coefficient with a traditional hunting tip, aerodynamic heat reduces the ballistic coefficient and decreases accuracy, particularly at long ranges (beyond 365 meters). To mitigate this effect, Hornady identified a heat-resistant polymer and developed the patented Heat Shield tip. This revolutionary tip creates the perfect apex for the bullet, with exceptionally consistent results from bullet to bullet and from lot to lot.
At conventional distances (0-365 m), the ELD-X bullet is designed for continuous expansion along the entire wound channel. Upon impact, the thin apical section of the bullet collapses until reaching the thicker part of the jacket, where the Interlock ring operates to hold core and jacket together. The more massive part of the bullet, then continues its path further facilitating expansion, resulting in extremely high lethality.
