Introduced in early 1895 for the Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle, the .30-30 was the first small-caliber sporting rifle cartridge in the United States designed for smokeless powder. Jacketed bullets for the .30-30 have a nominal diameter of 0.308 inches (about 8.9 mm). Lead cast bullets for the .30-30 are also popular and usually have a diameter of 0.309 inches (about 8.9 mm).

The .30-30 is considered the "baseline class" for modern big game hunting cartridges.
