Compasses
The compass is an instrument for identifying the cardinal points (north, south, east, and west) on the Earth's surface and in the atmosphere, for the purposes of orientation and navigation. It is equipped with a magnetized needle that, free to rotate on a pivot, has the property of aligning along the lines of force of the Earth's magnetic field, thus indicating the north-south direction (within the error limits due to magnetic declination).
